In any other situation, Yugi Moto looks like a short, rather shy, but otherwise friendly high school sophomore. But once his Dueling Deck is in his hands, you begin to see the talent he possesses. For his age, he holds surprising skill as his friends will attest.

Yugi lives with his grandfather, Sugoroku, who owns and runs a trading card shop and is himself an authority on Duel Monsters. It's from his grandfather that Yugi learned most of the strategies of Duel Monsters. His own Dueling Deck contains special cards from his grandfather's collection. He also received from Sugoroku a mystical artifact called the Millennium Puzzle: then incomplete. Legend had it that whoever could solve the Puzzle would unlock vast powers. Not one to back down from the challenge, Yugi put his effort into the Puzzle...and would you believe it? He actually managed to complete the puzzle!

That was when everything changed. With the Millennium Puzzle finally completed, the power of the Millennium Puzzle was released, and the shadow soul who had been dormant within its confined flowed into Yugi's mind. Yami Yugi, Yu-Gi-Oh, the legendary King of Games, was free.

Now with the power of the Puzzle unleashed, Yugi finds himself thrust into a grand struggle five millennia in the making: a struggle involving not just the Millennium Items, but the Duel Monsters card game. He must put his dueling skills and his faith in "The Heart of the Cards" against the likes of the ruthless Seto Kaiba and the cunningly devious Maximillion Pegasus, and these are just the tip of the iceberg compared not just to what lies beyond but also to the internal puzzle he must now solve between himself and the mysterious Yami Yugi who knows resides with him in the same body.

Yugi's Dueling Deck is reputed as one for usually having a game-saver in the next draw. Focused mostly on Dark monsters, Yugi identifies himself with the Dark Magician, and a number of his strategies revolve around him. His other notable cards include Mystical Elf, Summoned Skull, Curse of Dragon, Gaia the Fierce Knight, and (surprisingly) Kuriboh. He once also possessed the five pieces of Exodia the Forbidden One, and he managed to actually get them together once in a duel with Seto Kaiba, pulling victory from almost certain defeat, but before the Duelist Kingdom tournament Weevil Underwood threw them overboard on the boat to Duelist Island.
